Objectives: Therapeutic interaction with families, including those with adolescents, is a difficult task for any counselor. A close analysis of therapeutic conversations will enhance our understanding of the therapeutic process with families and the role of a counselor.
Methods: We conducted a micro-analytic case study of solution-focused family therapy cases conducted by Insoo Kim Berg. This study combines a microanalysis and a case study to examine the interactions between the counselor and family members in the context of each case where solution-focused family therapy took place.
Results: First, in both cases, the counselor started the conversation with a ¡°strength dialogue¡± that confirmed the competence of the adolescent clients. Afterwards, the treatment process unfolded in the order of ¡°goal setting¡±, ¡°miracle question¡±, ¡°miracle scaling question¡±, and ¡°therapeutic break and message¡±. Second, the counselor took a circular and respectful approach to all the families so that no family members, including adolescents, were left out of the treatment process.
Conclusions: These results have clinical significance in providing an in-depth understanding of solution- focused family therapy with families including adolescents.
